Chapel St Leonard’s Primary School achieves ‘Silver’ Artsmark Award!
Pupils and staff at Chapel St Leonard’s Primary School are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Artsmark Award in a momentous year for the programme as it celebrates 20 years of arts, culture and creativity in schools.
The Artsmark Award is the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by Arts Council England. It supports schools to develop and celebrate arts and cultural education, putting creativity and wellbeing at the heart of the curriculum. Artsmark ensures every young person can be creative and access a diverse, high-quality cultural education.
In order to achieve their Artsmark Award, Chapel St Leonard’s School had to develop their arts and culture provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum. This was achieved by creating an overall plan that was committed to and delivered across the whole school.
The Artsmark Assessor commended Chapel St Leonard’s Primary School on their journey:
'Your Artsmark journey has enabled you to increase the range of arts activities resulting in your pupils engaging in more exciting arts learning. There is a newly designed arts curriculum in place with an emphasis on progression of skills and you have included a range of artists to be studied.
You have arranged for a visitor of the Hindu faith to share their experiences of Diwali and culture, pupils have been able to take part in singing with a professional singer from the BBC, trips have been organised to see a London West End show and a visit to Lincoln Cathedral to study architecture. New opportunities for pupils to perform to an audience have been created through your work with Lincolnshire Music Service where some pupils were able to play the ukulele and djembe drumming. In planning for arts experiences, pupils’ views are actively considered and where possible, these are followed up such as in the implementation of after school arts-based clubs (choir, art club and The Mighty Creatives).
It was wonderful to see as a consequence of your Artsmark journey, pupils now see the arts differently, that they have become increasingly confident in expressing their creativity and in performing.”
On receiving the award, Tom Shaw, Headteacher, said:
“We are thrilled to have been recognised with this award. At Chapel St Leonard’s, we pride ourselves on offering our pupils a wide range of enriched activities, so it is brilliant to see that these have all been acknowledged with this accreditation. A massive thank you to Miss Hicks and Miss Vines who supported the application, and to all the staff who wholeheartedly embrace our enhanced curriculum.”
